The fishing museum: presentation
The fishing museum was inaugurated in 1961 by fishing enthusiasts who came together under the association “Les Amis du Musée de la Pêche”. Their goal was to share their passion and their know-how with the general public, but especially the daily lives of sailors. Today, their objective has been achieved and interests thousands of visitors per year.
The establishment is located at the gates of the Ville Close of Concarneau, in the former arsenal on rue Vauban which is called the Hervo barracks, on an area of 1,500 m2. In the historic heart of the city, access to the museum remains easy and practical.
Under the name “Musée de France” and managed by the Concarneau Cornouaille agglomeration, the fishing museum brings together a large collection of models, boats and objects from the daily life of fishermen, in order to continue the sharing of knowledge of the world of fishing and the maritime world.
The fishing museum: the collection
When it was created in 1961, the fishing museum still had very few collection items. But over time and gradually, he was able to collect lots of real-size boats, boat models and essential objects from the maritime world to share the secrets of fishing with as many people as possible.
During the visit, you will learn more about the history of fishing, aquariums and fishing techniques via different media (slideshows, videos, plans and explanatory diagrams). At the museum on land, you can see a coracle or even a rowed lifeboat, the Commandant-Garreau, on display. At the afloat museum which is a real boat moored at the quay, you can visit the Hémérica, a classic trawler built in 1957.
