The Saint Léger chapel

Not far from the banks of the Bélon, in the hamlet of Lanneguy, the current Saint-Léger chapel has stood in the shape of a Latin cross since around 1850. It was erected to replace the two chapels nearby, one of which has the same name and the other which is Notre-Dame-de-Grâces.

When visiting the place, we notice the presence of canes and wax dolls representing children’s legs. This is in reference to Saint-Léger who was generally invoked to relieve leg pain and to help children who were late in learning to walk.

Riec-sur-Belon formerly depended on the Diocese of Cornouaille, hence its religious aspect and the existence of numerous chapels throughout the commune.

The covered alley of Kerantiec

Classified as a historic monument since 1953, the covered alley of Kerantiec is a rare megalith which dates from the Neolithic era (3rd millennium BC) and which served as a burial place for farmers and breeders. With its 9 meters long, it has the particularity of being buttressed and oriented east-west. It is easily recognizable thanks to the numerous pillars that form it, especially which are arranged to form a double-sloped roof.

The small port of Bélon

The small port of Bélon is a unique place naturally enclosed in the rocks. It constitutes a starting point for several hiking circuits depending on your desires and endurance. But, the most important thing is that it gives a breathtaking view of the different oyster farming parks for which Riec-sur-Belon is famous.

At the end of your stroll in the small port of Bélon, taste the famous Bélon flat oysters with a hazelnut flavor, much appreciated by those in the know! It’s much better to eat them fresh in front of the sea.

The port also represents the opportunity to buy fresh fish and other seafood products that are only found in Brittany.

Oyster farms at Bélon Castle

On the banks of the Bélon, the oyster farms of Bélon Castle saw the light of day in 1864 with the creation of the first oyster farm by Auguste de Solminihac. The castle and the estate still belong to the Solminihac family, but they are still listed as part of the heritage of Riec-sur-Belon.

Visit the entire oyster farm at Bélon Castle on a self-guided tour from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, or on a 45-minute guided tour to discover the park, the working methods, as well as the history of Bélon oyster farming!
